Case · The death of Princess Diana

Was Princess Diana murdered?

The answer so far
No record shows a murder plot

French judges, a British police inquiry and an inquest jury all found a crash caused by a drunk, speeding driver and the photographers chasing him. No independent record supports murder, but the jury was never allowed to consider it and the white Fiat Uno has never been found.

  • UnverifiedTheoryMI6 arranged the crash that killed Diana and Dodi Al Fayed

What happened in the Alma underpass in Paris on 31 August 1997, what the French judges, the British police and the inquest jury found, and what the murder theories rest on.

The question How did Diana, Princess of Wales, die in Paris on 31 August 1997, and is there any evidence that her death was arranged?

Diana tells her lawyer, and writes in a note, that she fears a planned car “accident”

Her lawyer, Lord Mishcon, noted that she had been told efforts would be made to injure or get rid of her, for example by “a pre-prepared brake failure”. A note she left with her butler, Paul Burrell, published in 2003, says someone “is planning an ‘accident’ in my car, brake failure and serious head injury”.

“MI6 killed her”

Did British intelligence arrange the crash, as Mohamed Al Fayed alleged?

Where it came from · 1997 onward

Mohamed Al Fayed pushed it “from the start”, Time reported. His lawyers set it out in a February 2003 submission to Scotland’s justice minister and a July 2003 letter urging the coroner to open the inquests.

T2Time, 7 Apr 2008T1Operation Paget report, Dec 2006pp. 3, 94involved party: Metropolitan Police (a British state body investigating an allegation against the British establishment; it held Diana’s 1995 note about a car “accident” from 1997 until 2003 without telling the coroner)
Traction (measured, with the date)
Their strongest arguments, and what the evidence says
  1. Diana herself predicted a car “accident”

Al Fayed’s submissions quote the note she left with her butler about a planned car “accident”.

T1Operation Paget report, Dec 2006p. 94involved party: Metropolitan Police (a British state body investigating an allegation against the British establishment; it held Diana’s 1995 note about a car “accident” from 1997 until 2003 without telling the coroner)
    The premise: confirmed

True: she told her lawyer in 1995 and wrote it in a note. Her lawyer did not find it credible, though her private secretary said he “half believed” it. A fear she voiced is not evidence that anyone acted on it.

T1Operation Paget report, Dec 2006pp. 97, 99involved party: Metropolitan Police (a British state body investigating an allegation against the British establishment; it held Diana’s 1995 note about a car “accident” from 1997 until 2003 without telling the coroner)
  2. MI6 had plans to kill people in staged accidents

Proponents rely on Richard Tomlinson’s sworn account of a plan to cause a tunnel crash with a blinding flash.

T1Operation Paget report, Dec 2006p. 500involved party: Metropolitan Police (a British state body investigating an allegation against the British establishment; it held Diana’s 1995 note about a car “accident” from 1997 until 2003 without telling the coroner)
    The premise: confirmed

Partly true: MI6’s former chief admitted an officer proposed killing a Balkan leader, and said it was rejected. The tunnel-and-strobe version is not confirmed, and Tomlinson later said he may have been wrong about the target and method.

  3. Henri Paul’s blood samples were not his

Al Fayed’s claims, listed by Paget, say it is “probable that the samples analysed by the French authorities are not samples of Mr Paul’s blood”.

T1Operation Paget report, Dec 2006p. 366involved party: Metropolitan Police (a British state body investigating an allegation against the British establishment; it held Diana’s 1995 note about a car “accident” from 1997 until 2003 without telling the coroner)
    The premise: unverified

DNA tests ordered by a French judge in 2005 matched the blood to his mother, with a probability of maternity of 99.9997%. This reaches us only through the Paget report; no independent test was read either way.

T1Operation Paget report, Dec 2006pp. 352–353involved party: Metropolitan Police (a British state body investigating an allegation against the British establishment; it held Diana’s 1995 note about a car “accident” from 1997 until 2003 without telling the coroner)
  4. The inquest was never allowed to find murder

After the verdict, Al Fayed said, “The most important thing is it is murder.”

    The premise: confirmed

True: the coroner told the jury he had not seen “a shred of evidence” for a plot and left murder off the list of verdicts. He said he was legally obliged not to offer it because no evidence had been produced.
