Epstein is arrested on federal sex trafficking charges
A federal grand jury in Manhattan had indicted him on 2 July 2019 for sex trafficking and conspiracy. He was arrested at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey on his return from France and taken to the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in New York, a federal jail.
- 7 Jul 2019confirmed
He is moved to the jail’s Special Housing Unit
The move was due to media coverage of his case and other inmates’ awareness of him. Inmates in the Special Housing Unit are kept locked in their cells for about 23 hours a day.
T1DOJ Inspector General, Jun 2023pp. 1, 5 - 23 Jul 2019confirmed
Epstein is found with a cloth around his neck and put on suicide watch
At 1:27 a.m. officers found him with an orange cloth around his neck. He first said his cellmate had tried to kill him, then said he did not know what happened. He came off suicide watch on 24 July and off psychological observation on 30 July.
T1DOJ Inspector General, Jun 2023pp. i–ii - 29 Jul 2019confirmed
Half the jail’s camera recordings silently stop
Disks failed in one of the two video recorders. The cameras still showed live pictures, but about half of them, including most around Epstein’s unit, were no longer recorded. Staff found out on 8 August; it was not fixed before he died.
T1DOJ Inspector General, Jun 2023pp. ii, 82, 84, 93 - 30 Jul 2019confirmed
The jail’s psychologists say Epstein must always have a cellmate
The Psychology Department emailed the requirement to over 70 MCC employees. A new cellmate shared his cell until 9 August.
T1DOJ Inspector General, Jun 2023pp. ii, 2 - 9 Aug 2019confirmed
His cellmate leaves and nobody replaces him
The cellmate was transferred out, as staff had been told the day before, and no new one was assigned. That evening a supervisor let Epstein make an unrecorded, unmonitored phone call, against prison rules. At about 8 p.m. he was locked in his cell, alone.
T1DOJ Inspector General, Jun 2023pp. ii, 2 - 9–10 Aug 2019confirmed
No one checks on him overnight, and the records say they did
No 30-minute rounds were made after about 10:40 p.m. and no inmate counts after 4 p.m., but the forms were filled in as if they had been. The two staff on duty instead “sat at their desk, browsed the internet, and moved around the common area of the SHU”, the indictment says.
T1DOJ Inspector General, Jun 2023pp. ii, 3, 5T1Indictment of the two guards, Nov 2019pp. 1–2, para. 1Sources disagreeThe 2019 indictment says no count or round was made from about 10:30 p.m.; the 2023 Inspector General report says no rounds after about 10:40 p.m. Both are shown. - 10 Aug 2019confirmed
Epstein is found hanged in his cell at about 6:30 a.m.
Staff delivering breakfast found him hanging from the top bunk by an orange cloth and began CPR. Paramedics took him to New York Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead at 7:36 a.m. His cell held extra linens, some torn into nooses.
T1DOJ Inspector General, Jun 2023pp. 1–2 - 16 Aug 2019confirmed
New York City’s medical examiner rules it a suicide by hanging
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner performed the autopsy on 11 August and announced the ruling on 16 August. Toxicology tests found no medications or illegal drugs.
Sources disagreeThe 2025 DOJ/FBI memo refers to “August 19, 2019 autopsy findings”. The Inspector General dates the autopsy 11 August, and AP and NPR report the ruling announced on 16 August. - 19 Nov 2019confirmed
The two staff on duty are charged with falsifying records
A grand jury indicted correctional officer Tova Noel and Michael Thomas for conspiracy and making false records about the counts. The indictment describes Epstein as having “committed suicide overnight while unobserved.”
- 2021confirmed
The charges are dropped after both guards meet the terms of a deal
On 25 May 2021 both signed deferred prosecution agreements admitting they had falsely certified the counts and rounds, with 100 hours of community service. The court dismissed the charges on 13 December 2021. Other staff who signed false forms were not prosecuted.

The Justice Department’s Inspector General reports “numerous and serious failures”
It interviewed 54 witnesses and collected over 127,000 documents. It found no evidence contradicting the FBI’s finding that no crime caused the death, and nobody on the recorded video approaching any cell tier between about 10:40 p.m. and 6:30 a.m.

The DOJ and FBI repeat that he died by suicide and release the jail video
An unsigned memo said the FBI’s review of the common-area footage confirmed that “nobody entered any of the tiers in the SHU” overnight. It linked to raw and enhanced versions of the video.

The medical examiner found the injuries of a hanging, not a strangling
She told the Inspector General the pattern of neck fractures and the ligature mark fitted a hanging, and there were no defensive wounds or bruises from a struggle. She said the ruling was her own independent judgment and she was not pressured.

30 Oct 2019: a pathologist paid by Epstein’s family says it looks like murder
Dr Michael Baden, a former New York City medical examiner, said on Fox News that the findings were “more consistent with ligature homicidal strangulation”, citing the broken neck bones. Confirmed that he said it; his opinion is a tier-3 interview, not a record.

Witnesses with a view of his cell door saw no one go in
Staff and three inmates whose cells faced Epstein’s told the Inspector General no one entered or left his cell after he was locked in. A relative who said they had “photographic proof” the door was left open later said the photos did not show that.

Key claim: Epstein was murdered
No tier 1 or 2 record supports it. The independent city medical examiner’s findings contradict it, and the Inspector General found no evidence against the FBI’s finding that no crime was involved.

Bullshit meter
- Key claim: Epstein was murdered. Disproven.
- Key claim contradicted by tier 1? Yes. The New York City medical examiner, who is independent of the federal prison system, found a hanging, not a strangling. The only contrary view attached here is from a pathologist paid by the family.
Fluff meter: possibly planted
- Can’t be traced to an original record. Absent: the doubts trace to a named pathologist who attended the autopsy.
- First appeared from new or anonymous accounts. Not measured (needs ingestion).
- Coordinated identical wording. Not measured.
- Cited source doesn’t exist. Absent: the autopsy and Dr Baden’s statements exist.
- Later contradicted. Present: the medical examiner restated her ruling the same day, and the 2023 Inspector General report found nothing against it.
