Did Hitler escape to Argentina?

The answer so far
No: the records place his death in Berlin

Bunker witnesses, the 1945 British inquiry and a 2018 French study of the jaw held in Moscow all point to suicide in Berlin on 30 April 1945. The escape stories rest on unchecked tips, a skull fragment that was never the basis of the identification, and Soviet claims made while Moscow held his body.

“He lived out his life in Argentina”

Did Hitler escape to Argentina and live near Bariloche, as books and TV series have claimed?

Where it came from · 1945 onward

Tips that Hitler had landed in Argentina reached the FBI in 1945. Gerrard Williams says books on it existed by 1953. Abel Basti’s books, then “Grey Wolf” (2011) and “Hunting Hitler” (2015), carried it to a mass audience.

Traction (measured, with the date)
Their strongest arguments, and what the evidence says
  1. There is no forensic proof that he died

“There is no forensic evidence for his, or Eva Braun’s deaths,” Gerrard Williams said in 2011.

    The premise: disproven

The 2018 study examined the jaw itself and found it is Hitler’s. The Soviet autopsy reports had been published in 1968. What is true is that no DNA has ever been taken from the remains.

  2. Eyewitnesses saw him in Argentina

The book rests on people who say they met Hitler and Eva Braun there.

    The premise: unverified

No sighting is confirmed by any tier 1–2 record read for this case. The witness accounts themselves were not checked.

  3. Hitler and Eva Braun used body doubles in Berlin

The book says a double took Hitler’s place and an actress stood in for Braun.

    The premise: disproven

The teeth in Moscow carry Hitler’s own unusual bridgework, worn by long use, as described by his dentist and the dentist’s assistant. Hitler’s own valet and adjutant swore they found his body.

Abel Basti, a Bariloche journalist, has written books saying Hitler lived in Argentina for years

His publisher’s synopsis says he did not die on 30 April 1945 and “pasó muchos años en la Argentina” (spent many years in Argentina) with Eva Braun under false identities. Basti has also led searches for U-boat wrecks off Argentina.

Basti alleged plagiarism and sought payment; Gerrard Williams denied it, saying Basti did not invent the idea and that books on it went back to 1953. Historian Guy Walters called the book “2,000 percent rubbish”.

Key claim: Hitler escaped Berlin in 1945 and lived on in Argentina

Three separate kinds of record point the same way: the 2018 French study of the jaw held in Moscow (its access controlled by Russia’s FSB), the sworn 1956 testimony of Hitler’s own valet and adjutant, and the 1945 British inquiry. No record read supports any Argentine sighting.
