Case · The Mandela effect: did the timeline change, or is it our memory?

Did the timeline change, or is it our memory?

Guess first

“The past or the timeline changed, and people remember the old version”

The big claim in this hole. What do the records say?

The answer so far is under this. Make your call above, or skip to see it.
The answer so far
Our memory: shared false memories, no changed past

A 2022 study confirmed that many people share the same wrong memory of certain familiar images, and known memory errors can produce it, though why the same error recurs is not fully explained. No record read here shows the past changing: the oldest artifacts checked carry the versions people call new.

Meters

Theory meters read the headline theory, “The timeline changed, and we remember the old one”. Tap a meter for its reasons.

Thousands of people remember Nelson Mandela dying in prison, the “Berenstein” Bears and a Monopoly Man with a monocle. None of it matches the record. This case checks each famous example against the original, sets out what memory research has measured, and asks whether anything points to the past itself changing.

The question When many people share the same wrong memory, did the past or the timeline change, or is it ordinary memory going wrong in the same way?

“The timeline changed, and we remember the old one”

Did the past, or reality itself, change, leaving some people with memories of the old version?

Where it came from · 2010

Fiona Broome named the effect in an article dated 9 September 2010 and read it as evidence of alternate realities. By 2012 a blogger had applied the idea to the Berenstain Bears; by 2016 YouTube videos were blaming CERN.

Traction (measured, with the date)
Their strongest arguments, and what the evidence says
  1. Too many strangers share exactly the same wrong memory for it to be chance

Believers point to the same specific error turning up in people who never compared notes.

    The premise: confirmed

True: the 2022 study found seven icons where one specific wrong version was chosen more often than the real one, consistently across people. That is a finding about memory. Nothing in it shows the past changing.

  2. People remember versions they have almost never seen

If the wrong version is not out there, the argument goes, the memory must come from somewhere else.

    The premise: confirmed

True for some icons: the study found the errors occur although most of what people see is the correct image, and for the Monopoly Man and Pikachu the wrong version is rare online. The researchers found no single cause; they did not find a changed past.

Step by step
  1. confirmed

Broome and others read the shared memories as evidence of alternate dimensions

The 2022 study’s authors note that this is how Broome and others online interpreted it, and that most earlier writing treated the effect as a conspiracy theory.
