Are birds government drones?

Guess first

“The birds we see have been replaced by government drones”

The big claim in this hole. What do the records say?

The answer so far is under this. Make your call above, or skip to see it.
The answer so far
No. It is a joke, and its creators say so

Birds Aren’t Real is a deliberate parody: its creator said in 2021 he made it up in 2017, and peer-reviewed surveys track living wild birds across North America. Governments have spied with real pigeons and flown bird-like drones, but on a small scale and never in place of birds.

Since 2017, billboards, T-shirts and chanting crowds have claimed birds were replaced by government surveillance drones. Its creator says he made it up, as a parody of conspiracy culture. Separately, governments really have spied with pigeons and flown drones built to look like birds. This case keeps the joke and the real record apart.

The question Have birds been replaced by government surveillance drones, and if the claim is a joke, what is real about spying with birds?

“Birds aren’t real: they’re government drones”

Have the birds we see been killed off and replaced by government surveillance drones?

Where it came from · Jan 2017

Peter McIndoe wrote the three words on the back of a poster at a women’s march in Memphis and improvised the drone story on the spot; a friend’s video of it spread online.

Traction (measured, with the date)
Their strongest arguments, and what the evidence says
  1. The government really has spied with birds

The movement’s lore, as Gaydos told it: the CIA decided to replace birds “with robots and spy on people”.

    The premise: confirmed

True in part: the CIA put cameras on real pigeons and trained a raven, and China flies dove-like drones. But the CIA calls its pigeon cameras ineffective, and the Dove team says its scale is small. Real birds were used, not replaced.

  2. A former CIA officer confessed to the programme

“The Confession Of Eugene Price”, in which “an ex-CIA agent came out and said everything the government had done”.

    The premise: disproven

Price is a character. McIndoe told 60 Minutes he hired “the oldest man I could find” to play him, and told the Times he hired an actor for the role.

  3. The cover-up started in the 1970s

McIndoe’s improvised lore: the cover-up “began in the 1970s”.

    The premise: disproven

Its creators say they made it up in 2017. Bird surveys since 1970 track living birds, which have declined in number; nothing read records birds swapped for machines. The CIA’s 1970s bird work used live pigeons.

  3. likely

The “evidence” was manufactured by the movement itself

The founders say they wrote a false history and fake documents, hired an actor to play the ex-CIA whistleblower, and posted a “1987” advert for a movement that began in 2017.

Governments have spied with birds and bird-like machines, on a small scale

The CIA put cameras on real pigeons and built a flapping robot dragonfly, neither of which worked well. China flies 200-gram dove-like drones, but a team member called the scale “still small”.
